Akosua Adomako Ampofo is a scholar, filmmaker, and advocate for knowledge decolonization and social justice. She co-founded the African Studies Association of Africa in 2013, serving as its founding Vice President and later President until 2022, fostering the advancement of African scholarship and co-hosting biennial conferences across the continent. She played a key role in the documentary When Women Speak (2022), which explores the voices of Ghanaian women activists navigating political shifts from the 1960s onward.
Her academic journey includes over 35 years of teaching and research at Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana (UG), of which she has been a former Director. A Professor of African and Gender Studies, she was also the foundation Director of the Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy (CEGENSA) at UG. She was the Wangari Maathai Guest Professor at the University of Kassel (2023–2024) and her current appointment as the Claude Ake Visiting Chair at the Nordic Africa Institute and Uppsala University’s Department of Peace and Conflict Research. She is also a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has been recognized for her contributions to feminist scholarship and activism, receiving the Sociologists for Women and Society Feminist Activism Award in 2010. A lifelong learner, Akosua is pursuing an NYU Business of Entertainment certificate (expected September 2025) and has participated in masterclasses with Sundance Collab, Africa No Filter Academy, and Team Naledi, covering topics from screenwriting to producing, and crowdfunding. Passionate about storytelling and amplifying underrepresented voices, she aligns with the production company’s mission to create impactful narratives.
Outside of work, she enjoys swimming, dancing, and sharing good food and wine in an atmosphere of freedom and joy. She is inspired by biopics and documentaries about individuals who brightened their corners and holds close the words of Maya Angelou, bell hooks and Wangari Maathai, believing deeply in the power of connection and collective healing.
